How to Create a Website Tutorial

Link Popularity Directory Submissions

Submitting your site to a directory is not difficult, but gathering all the inbound links you can to your website does not necessarily move you to the top of the SERP's (search engine results page).

A submission to a directory is not difficult but if done manually can be time consuming. If you are short on money you can start building your links with the free directories and once you have some extra money in your budget, buy some one way links into a directory.

Submitting your site

When you are looking for directories many will request that you have a reciprocal link exchange with them. They will add your website as long as you place a link on your site to theirs. It could be on your home page or you may have the ability to tell them where you will be placing it.

Before requesting your site to be added, make sure you read the guidelines on what types of sites they will accept and why some submissions are not approved. Here are just a few directories that you can start with, but there are hundreds more on the Internet to help build your links.

I am sure you want more directories you can submit to, here is a link to a free SEO friendly directory list. You can either download the list or see it on their website.

When you want to find more directories to be listed into, make sure they are search engine friendly. Check out also if they have human editors. You may not want to list into a directory that everyone that submits their link is accepted.

Having seen many times in forums and blogs that the only way to make it into the top pages of the SERP's is to have huge amounts of incoming links into your website. While most search engines do take into account your inbound links it is not the quantity but the quality.

Building Link Popularity

Each page of your website can have their own page rank. When you are link building, work on building the links to your other pages in your site also.

Many directories only let you add your home page to their directory, but some will let you link to your other pages if you pay. So don't forget to work on link campaigns for your other pages.

If you have a budget, you can pay a company to submit your website to directories.

Many of the directories will not accept computer generated submissions to their directory and they are using spam guards to combat this. Just because there are hundreds of directories on the Internet, you don't necessarily have to submit to each one.

One Way Linking

Using directory submissions to gather one way links (inbound) is a good start to your campaign but all incoming links are not created equal. Google and other major search engines do put a little more weight on these links but if the links are not quality then it may not help. This website is about how to create a website, if I have incoming links from a jewelry store, that is not relevant at all to the theme of this site and would not carry much weight to it. So when you are submitting to places for one way links, keep in mind that you need to stay within the theme of your site.

Reciprocal Link Exchange

Many directories may want you to place a link on your website to be included into their listings and if you do not, you will be rejected. If you don't want to have the reciprocal link, search for another directory to list in. There are hundreds that don't request it.

Doing your own submissions

This is a very time consuming task at times but make a schedule to work on just your link building as you would make the time to add new and original content to your site. Just because you submit to a directory does not necessarily mean you will included, so keep building your links and don't worry if you are turned down for some.

Do your submitting over a period of time. If one day the search engine crawls your site and sees only 2 inbound links and then comes back a month later and finds 1500, don't you think they may look to this as trying to cheat the bots?

There are many niche directories on the Internet, make sure you scout those out for your theme and request your site to be added.

Keep working on your link popularity using other methods also and you will soon have incoming links to your website.
