What is a Domain Name?

Your own name will uniquely identify your site on the internet. A domain consists of two main parts, for example www.createawebsitetutorial.com :

The first part - "createawebsitetutorial" - represents your business and how people view you.
The second part - dot com - is a top level domain. See below why you should stick to a top level if possible.

Top Level Domains - Do I need it?

The top level extension are .com, .org, .net, .edu (educational institutes only), dot gov (government use only).

Try to stick to a dot com domain when you register since most people are more familiar with that extension. There are many good ones left, but you may have to be a little creative.

Registering a Domain Name

You can register a domain name at any domain registrar, park it, then find web hosting.

You could simplify the process by registering your name with the hosting company you will use for your site.

Many hosting companies will register a free domain for you when you host your site with them.

Decide before you register your name if you want to have private domain name registration.

What is Private Domain Registration

This blocks personal information from anyone wanting to look at who owns a site. Anyone can see where you registered your domain, your name, address, phone number, IP address, when it was created, expires, and administrative contact.

But when you register your domain private, all of the personal info is blocked.
